Los Angeles LAX Airport Overview

Los Angeles International Airport LAX is California's largest Airport. In January 2011 the new ARCC or 'Airport Response Coordination Center' was opened, enhancing the Airport's efficiency and crisis management capabilities, and improving services by streamlining management of all of the Airport's operations. This project is followed by the replacement of the Central Utility Plan.

LAX Airport is located 15 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles, in southern California, and is accessible via State Hwy 1, and Interstate Hwys. 405 & 105. To check on Airport conditions you can tune in LAX Air Radio 530.

With four runways and an estimated 59 million passengers a year, Los Angeles International Airport is served by a multitude of domestic and international airlines offering flights across the U.S. and around the world, particularly long-haul flights to/from Asia, Australasia and Latin America.
Air China offers two daily flight to Beijing, while Turkish Airlines offers 4 weekly nonstop flights to Istanbul, and Iberia now offers non-stop flights to Madrid. American Airlines offers flights to Shanghai, and Korean Air introduced Airbus A380 Super Jumbo service between LAX and Seoul - LAX being the only airport for Korean Air on the West Coast (at present Korean Air offers four daily departures to Seoul.
Note: The Airport can now serve as port of entry for flights to/from Cuba (but still restricted to 'purposeful' travel - passengers need to be either close relatives of Cuban residents, or be involved in the medical or agricultural business sectors, or travel for educational or religious purposes).

On-Airport Hotels: Nearly 50 hotel/motels are located right on-Airport property - The Tom Bradley terminal offers free phone boards in the baggage area, connecting to hotels/motels, many of which offer free shuttle services.

The Central Terminal Complex at Los Angeles International Airport includes nine passenger terminals connected by a U-shaped two-level roadway -Terminals 1, 2 & 3 at right, and Terminals 4 through 8 at left, with the spectacular Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) at the end (and parking garages in the middle). All terminals are ADA accessible.
To connect from one terminal to the other, board the blue-marked LAX bus, Route A, on the Lower Arrival Level island in front of each terminal, under the sign ‘Lax Shuttle Airline Connection’, running about every 12-15 minutes, 24/7. (It also runs Route C to the LAX Parking Lots C or Route G to the Metro Green Line Station). Terminals 5, 6 & 7 are connected by a tunnel, and terminal 7 has a walkway to Satellite 8 and a walkway to Terminal 6.
(For more terminal information click on 'Terminal Maps'.)

Parking Options at Los Angeles International Airport:  (For more parking information click on 'Airport Parking'.)

Rental Cars at or near LAX Airport: An estimated 40 rental car agencies operate at LAX Airport with off-Airport vehicle rental sites; many of them provide phone links inside the Lower/Arrival Level area of the passenger terminals to request a shuttle pick up to the rental car sites.
Those which are permitted to make pick-ups/drop-offs directly from the terminals via courtesy shuttles are: Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, Fox/Payless, National and Thrifty. Their shuttle pickup area is designated under the purple sign 'Rental Car Shuttles' on the Lower/Arrival level islands outside baggage claim.
If you choose one of the other rental car agencies, contact your choice directly by using the Ground Transportation Telephone Boards in the baggage claim areas of each terminal to arrange for pick-up. You can use the free LAX Shuttle Bus, located on the Arrivals level island under the 'LAX Shuttle' sign, to Lot C to reach the Off-Airport Rental Car Terminal and to meet your chosen rental car courtesy shuttle.

To get from Los Angeles International Airport to your destination, you have a choice of renting a car, taking a taxi, using a shared ride van, or taking the bus.
Use the following guidelines - for airline connections, use the A Route shuttle bus; to parking lot C, use the C Route shuttle, to the MetroLine use the G route shuttle.
1. Taxis can be found curbside on the Lower/Arrival Level islands in front of each terminal under the yellow taxi sign. You will get a ticket stating typical fares to major destinations. Only authorized taxis with an official LADT seal are permitted in the airport.
2. Two shared ride van companies, Prime Time Shuttle and SuperShuttle, operate out of LAX and are authorized to serve all Southern California counties, and pick up passengers on the Lower/Arrival Level islands in front of each terminal under the orange sign Shared Ride Vans.
3. Scheduled buses provide service from LAX to various parts of Los Angeles and some surrounding regions. Contact your individual choice directly. The following buses pick up passengers on the Lower/Arrival Level islands in front of each terminal under the green sign Buses & Long Distance Vans:
(a) Airport Bus to Pasadena - about 28 miles northeast of LAX; to Anaheim (where Disneyland is located), about 32 miles southeast of LAX; and to Buena Park, about 28 miles southeast of LAX.
(b) Airport Bus of Bakersfield - to Bakersfield, a two hours' drive north of Los Angeles.
(c). Antelope Valley Airport Express - to Newhall, Palmdale and Lancaster in the Antelope Valley, with Lancaster (the furthest location) about 75 miles north of LAX. 4. Metropolitan Express - to downtown L.A. and to Union Station, about 19 miles northeast of LAX.
(d) Santa Barbara Airbus - to Santa Barbara, plus nearby Goleta and Carpinteria. The drive to these areas (located northwest of LAX, along the sea coast) from the airport usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours.
(e) Ventura County Airporter - to Ventura and Oxnard, on the sea coast about one hour to one hour and a half northwest of LAX.

Future Airport Developments: 1. Under a 10-year lease agreement with Alaska Airlines, Terminal 6 will be totally overhauled and will become the terminal for Alaska Airlines & Horizon Air (both are presently in Terminal 3), thereby providing faster and more convenient connections to passengers on Mexico flights, and for those arriving/departing on code-share flights of its partner Delta Air Lines. The project is scheduled to be completed by summer 2012.  Furthermore in August 2011 it was announced that the following projects are being undertaken:
1. Major improvements at Terminal 5.
2. New in-line baggage screening system for Terminals 7 & 8.
3. Construction on the "Bradley West" project, the first phase of which is scheduled for completion in December 2012 - involves the west side gates and Great Hall.  Phase II will include new east side gates to be completed by December 2013.  Once Bradley West is completed, it will have 18 new boarding gates with waiting areas (nine of which will be for large aircraft); a large Great Hall for premier dining, retail shops, various amenities and airline club lounges.  Customs and immigration areas will be upgraded and secured corridors between Terminals 3 & 4 north and south of Tom Bradley will afford easy connection.

Los Angeles LAX Comments

  •

Los Angeles Airport gets a lot of passenger reviews, some irate, some resigned and a few positive ones. What you need to know: TSA check can take up to 2.5 hours (with Delta arrival even 3 hours), depending on the time of day and the terminal; TSA employees call out the names of passengers whose flights will depart in the next 15 minutes

  • Spouse Arriving at Separate Terminal

My flight arrives at Terminal 5 and my husband arrives at Terminal 6. We both will have baggage to retrieve. Are the baggage claim areas separate for these terminals, or will we be able to meet there? If not, how far is the walk between terminals? If we use the airport shuttle bus, does it travel from Terminal 5 to 6, or vice versa? Thank you, so much, for any assistance!

I am flying Air Pacific on a flight to Brisbane, and my parents are flying to Detroit via Delta about an hour later. Are they able to come to the International Terminal with me and see me off, and then go to their own terminal to catch their flight, or can the TB terminal only be accessed with an international ticket?
