Orlando MCO Airport Overview

Orlando International Airport MCO is one of the world's busiest airports and gateway to Disney World, Universal Studios, Epcot Center, Kennedy Space Center, as well as to numerous convention-ready hotels.  In 2011 it celebrated its 3th anniversary - during which time it doubled its dimensions and gates, and increased its passenger count by nearly 600 percent.

The Airport is located 9 miles southeast of dowtown Orlando, in Orange County, central Florida, at the junction of SR 436 (Semoran Blvd.) and SR 528 (Bee Line/Beach Line Expressway), and is accessibel by Interstate Hwy 4.

With four long runways and an estimated 34.7 million passengers a year, Orlando International Airport is hub to AirTran Airways and is served by countless domestic and international, regular & low-cost airlines offering direct and connecting flights to all points of the globe.

The on-Airport 443-room Hyatt Regency Hotel (tel. 407-825-1234), winner of the Gold Key Award since 2005 by 'Meeting & Conventions' magazine, is located on top the Main Terminal and offers covention & meeting rooms, an AAA-rated restuarant and 446 rooms.

The passenger terminal complex at Orlando International Airport consists of a three-level main passenger terminal landside, connected to four airside satellites, served by an elevated AGT train shuttle. Airline locations on Level 3 are divided into an A & B sides (also referred to as Terminals A & B), each with access to two airside satellites at the north & south end of it (Airsides 1 & 3 are part of Terminal A, and Airsides 2 & 4 are part of Terminal B).  Airside 1 has Wings 4, 5 & 6; Airside 2 has Wings 7and 9; Airside 3 has Wings 1, 2 & 3; and Airside 4 has Wings 10, 11 & 12 - each wing being surrounded by airline gates.  (For detailed terminal information, click on 'Terminal Map'.)

Making your journey through the airport less stressful:
Check-in for departing flights is on the Departures Level (Level 3) of the Main Terminal. Check your ticket and the Departures/ Arrivals Board whether you need to be on the A-side or B-side of the terminal. Domestic travelers can check in with the skycaps. You can also check in at one of the self-service kiosks inside the terminal. Once you have checked in and have your boarding pass, follow the overhead signage towards the gate from which your flight is departing. Check flight information displays for gate and departure time. Just before you board the AGT Train to the gate area you will pass through the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security checkpoint. Check the overhead signage to make sure you take the right train. Its doors will automatically open when the inbound passengers have exited the train. You arrive in the hub of the Airside Terminal with facilities including bathrooms, telephones, restaurants and shops; signs will guide you to the proper wing and gate of your departure.

Parking options at Orlando International include a cell phone lot, two garages and some parking lots. (For detailed parking information, click on 'Airport Parking'.)

Rental car facilities at Orlando Airport include on- and off-Airport rental car facilities. Those located on-Airport (Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, EZ, L&M, National & Thrifty) are within walking distance of the Main Terminal's A & B-Side, Level 1. While on-airport rental car agencies include the taxes in their fees, off-airport agencies charge the taxes extra.

Orlando MCO Comments

Orlando Airport gets high marks from passengers in general. They point out that arrivals & departures are well organized, and Airport employees are friendly and helpful, and they like the comfortable Monorail. While one traveler explains the terminal layout, others offer passenger pick-up choices and the food court & duty-free shop locations. They say that once you cleared Customs and Passport control, you have a choice of either taking your luggage with you on the tram (and getting out of the terminal faster) or putting it back on the belt and retrieving it at the baggage carousel. While one traveler likes the location of the rental car desk & facility, another points to off-Airport rental agencies offering shuttle services. Also, a passenger remarks that it may be better to do your shopping and eating before going through security, as post-security areas offer less options. Lastly, there's a tip how to access the hotel, and an alternative transportation to your cruise ship.

Please help, we have 10 hour layover @ MCO and we would like to head to Down Town Disney for the day. Can anyone advise somewhere safe to leave our baggage?

  • Rental Payment

I just wanted to leave a comment about the Avis car service. I just got back from a trip and wanted to leave some information about payment. We thought we could just pay with our debit card, so that was all we had planned for. However, you cannot leave a debit card on file with them, it must be a credit card. At the end of the week we were allowed to pay with our debit. I just wish we had known that we had to have a credit card to put the rental on before we had gotten there. It worked out in the end though. Hope this helps! http://www.LimosInn.com

I hope orlando parking is better than newark airport parking. I'm going to be parked there for 10 days or so, and it's not an airport I'm familiar with.

We arrived at Orlando from a long trip and to our surprise, we breezed through the arrivals process way faster than we had counted on and the beautiful setting inside and out of the Terminal was just the start for our Orlando adventure.

You are better off doing your eating and shopping at MCO before the security checkpoint, because there are not that many options thereafter.

Major rental car agencies at Orlando Airport maintain desks on level 1 of Terminals A & B, with no need for a shuttle bus; however, there are also a good number of lesser-known agencies which provide free shuttle service to their off-airport locations - the difference is money and time.
