Travel to Tianjin, China
Today we will travel to Tianjin. Literally meaning “where the emperor crosses the river,” Tianjin, China is a place of increasing popularity. Many tourists enjoy a visit to Ancient Culture Street or Gu Wenhua Jie. Here, you can browse through numerous shops and stalls to find all sorts of knick knacks and souvenirs. While exploring the city, stop and admire the beautiful Haihe River, dubbed the “mother river” of Tianjin. Have the kids with you? They will love a trip to the Haihe Fountain Amusement Park! Also, be sure to stop by Dule Temple, home to an ancient multi-storied pavilion. If you are in the mood to travel outside of the city, travel to Mt. Panshan Scenic Area. Located 68 miles outside of Tianjin, this lush mountain area will take you away from the hustle and bustle of city life. With numerous ancient temples surrounded by jade pine trees, Mt. Panshan will surely take your breath away!
RealTraveler Noctroler tells of a recent experience in Tianjin:
“To our delight, we realized that the Olympic torch relay was passing through Tianjin and it was only a few blocks away from our condo. Matt, my brother Davy and I walked towards the relay hoping to catch a glimpse of the event. It was only 8 in the morning but it already felt like 30 degrees (By the way, there is blue sky in China!!!!). We walked for about 30 minutes and found ourselves surrounded by beautiful European architecture left behind from the European concessions in the area” (more…)
Continuing the adventure, Noctroler shares:
“After breakfast we set out to find a catholic church that Joanna’s grandmother worked in when Joanna was a child living in Tianjin, and after about a 20 minute walk, we arrived at Xikai (St. Joseph) Catholic Cathedral. The Cathedral, built in 1917, looked out of place lying between a modern mall and towering skyscrapers, yet its concession era architecture was stunning both inside and out. It was nice to take a moment to rest inside, as it we found it very quiet and calm within the cathedral itself” (more…)

Confucian Temple in Nanjing
Welcome to Nanjing! Located in southern China, there are plenty of sights to see!
The Confucian Temple is a popular place for tourists to visit. Located near the Qin Huai River, this beautiful temple is a rather historical site. Build in 1034 during the Song Dynasty, the temple severed as a place of worship in honor of Confucius. While there, be sure to stop in Dacheng Hall. Inside you will find some of Nanjing’s main attractions, including the largest figure of Confucius in China! Next, stop by one of China’s greatest imperial tombs, the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum. Named a World Heritage Site, the Mausoleum is a main tourist attraction. Another interesting landmark to visit is the Palace of the Heavenly Kingdom. Known for its immense size and amazing architecture, this palace offers a look into Nanjing’s history.
RealTraveler rachel.p3 shares her abroad experience and a cooking class:
“Our first day in Nanjing we went to the Confucius Temple, which was right across the street from our first hotel. We also went to the Nanjing Massacre Museum and a Broque Museum (a museum about how they made the embroidered silk garments for emperors). While at the Confucius Temple, we ate a 16-course traditional Nanjing meal. Most of the dishes were good, but I absolutely HATED the stinky tofu…The Nanjing Massacre Museum was very moving. I had tears in my eyes at one point while looking through all the pictures and testimonials. I had no idea of this historical event because in U.S. History, during World War Two, the atrocities that we hear about are those of the Holocaust taking place in Germany. The Broque Museum was interesting–We got to see some workers making the silk embroideries in a traditional manner. In an 8 hour workday they only make 6cm of progress. They gave us a silk dress fashion show, which was fun. May 14 we spent at the Jinling Tourism School for cooking class. They gave us a very warm welcome and we enjoyed cooking corn-shaped fish and three-flavor tofu. ” (more…)
