We arrived following another comfortable amtrak journey, to the capital of the US, Washington DC. Neither of us knew what to expect from DC, apart from it being the murder capital of the United States and the place where George Bush lives (not related), I couldnt think of much else. DC is actually a fine city. We weren't here too long, but what we saw and what we did was great. First night we took it pretty easy, we had a nice dinner in the rooftop restaurant of our perfectly placed hotel. We could see Georges back garden from our hotel...would be a great stake out location, if you're that way inclined. Which we're not, of course. During our meal there was a perfect thunderstorm which passed over capitol hill, the white house and our hotel..amazing to look at from a rooftop garden. We had agreed to spend one full day in DC doing all the sights - the city is so well layed out that its easy to do. We also picked the same day that thousands of girl scouts descended on DC. They were everywhere. You start at the white house, work your way up to the LIncoln memorial, and then down the national mall to the Washington memorial and finally Capitol Hill. the sights really are fantastic, and although they are slightly cliched, they are very impressive once you are there. We spent a nice afternoon checking out the museums which are all up the mall. The natural history museum, the american Indian museum and the national air and space museum were all really interesting and worth a visit - especially when it's free and you're on a budget. The American holocaust museum was a sobering place, but a very interesting one to visit also. It''s one of the best laid out cities ive been in. We walked everywhere, although apparantly the finest subway system in the country was beneath our feet. In the evening time we walked up the the trendy neighbourhoods of Adams morgan and Dupont Circle. Both were lovely areas and full of bars and restaurants, Dupont circle happened to be in the midst of a gay pride parade, which packed the streets out. We thoroughly enjoyed DC, although our time there was short. Would definitely go back for another visit if i was in the neighbourhood. We had an early train to catch to Charleston, South Carolina the next morning so we had an early enough night. 10 hours on the train to come...
