Dresden for the Day

Another cloudy day dawned, and after parting with our Euros we set sail along the worst highway I have ever seen to Dresden. From the smooth autobahns to this dilapidated dual carraigeway we were beginning to feel like this road was also bombed along with Berlin and Dresden in WWII. Fortunately for Emma we found aspirin and Coldrex so she was a tad sedated as James and I bounced through the potholes and evaded the scattered road cones.
By mid-morning we were amidst East Germany’s most bombed town in the Second World War. We found a campground (somebody’s backyard) and turned around quickly into Dresden’s baroque Aldstadt. No sooner had we parked the car had the heavens opened up. Whilst this dampened the tourism somewhat Dresden’s unique appeal kept us motivated and when the sun reemerged the beauty of a digital camera gave us the opportunity to retake those postcard shots ruined by the grey sky.

Dresden like Berlin is still rebuilding. The terrace along the Elbe is amazing hiding the old town still rebuilding from the war and rebuilding from the recent floods. Work to restore the city’s once world famous cathedral is still only half complete. The Zwinger Place and the Theaterplatz are Dresden's most impressive sights and we braved the elements to stroll through them. We headed back to the yard and spent a nice comfortable evening playing cards. By far the smallest campsite we had found but the simplicity and ease of the place made it by far the most enjoyable.
