Alaskan Cruise

From 40 days and 40 nights... (in the US and Canada) in Ketchikan, United States on Jun 06 '10

Panda n Jodes has visited no places in Ketchikan

Boarded the ship at around 12 noon after undergoing digital finger printing and photographs and filling out a questionnaire which inquired about colds, coughs and diarrhoea. Amanda has been sick with a bad cough and cold since before we left for our holiday so she had to hold her breath until we got through security so she wouldn’t be escorted off for bringing disease to the ship!

The ship itself was something from the 70’s or 80’s decked out with gold’s, mauves, pinks and browns, however they sure know how to put on the food. As soon as we arrived on the ship at about 1pm they had a full buffet lunch set out to entertain us until our cabins were ready. After what we ate for lunch we made a pact to use the steps between all 12 levels of the ship for the remainder of the cruise. They tell you that each passenger puts on an average of 1 pound per day (roughly ½ kilo) and after the first lunch we could see how that was easily possible… and Jodie decided to take it on as a challenge.

At 5pm we left the docks at Vancouver and waved goodbye to people we didn’t know, had a few pina colada’s on the top level, stopped by the Art Gallery for a free champagne, and then onto duty free for sample drinks before heading off to the Showroom by the Sea to see our first stage show of the cruise.

Day 2- ship kitchen tour, game of quoittes, master class with the ship’s executive chef, reading in the Explorations café, whale sighting, gym workout, movie in the theatre, Champagne Captain’s Welcome, Broadway show and of course lots of eating at the buffet (breakfast/lunch and dinner).

Day 3 – First stop at Ketchikan for the day. Jodie went zip lining at Beer Creek however Amanda wasn’t as adventurous so she went off to do snorkelling. The temperature was very cold so they gave her a head to toe wet suit including hood, booties and gloves which showed off all her lumps and bumps. Afterwards we met up for some shopping in the town before the ship headed off to Sea.

We saw a ventriloquist comedian at night and dined in the Rotterdam Dining room which was a beautiful 4 course meal after which Amanda declared she was never eating dinner in the buffet section again and Jodie weeped…
